About the museum
The Casa natal de Goya is in Fuendetodos (Zaragoza) and is the house where the painter was born in 1746 and where he spent his early years. It is a modest farmhouse from the early 18th century, which had belonged to the artist's maternal uncle. Over time it changed hands and came to serve as the village inn.
In 1913 the painter Ignacio Zuloaga and other artists identified the house after discovering a plaque commemorating Goya's birth, and in 1916 Zuloaga bought it. After suffering damage during the Civil War, it was restored in 1946. In 1982 it was declared a national historic-artistic monument, a new restoration began, and the house was opened to the public as a museum in 1985. In 1996, to mark the 250th anniversary of Goya's birth, a room for temporary exhibitions was opened in an annexed building.
The building stands out for its austerity. It has a ground floor with an entrance hall, a stable and a kitchen, an upper floor with a room and two bedrooms, and a granary under the roof. It is decorated with furniture and utensils of the period, and with reproductions and graphic documentation about the painter.
