About the museum
The Museu Deu, opened in 1995, brings together the collection that the El Vendrell notary Antoni Deu Font built up over his lifetime: more than 2,800 pieces of very diverse origins and periods, from the 12th century to the present. It is a collector's collection, with no thematic or chronological unity, which links to the tradition of the great Catalan collectors such as Víctor Balaguer, Eduard Toda or Frederic Marès.
The museum occupies the Palau Rabassó or Cal Rabassó, a manor house from the late 19th century protected as a cultural asset of local interest. Its façade and the templete (small pavilion) that crowns the building, a symbol of the museum, are preserved, as is the former rear garden, which is part of the route. The exhibition is spread over four floors, and part of the basement is used for temporary exhibitions.
The collection covers painting, drawing and watercolour by artists such as Ramon Casas, Joaquim Mir and Eliseu Meifrèn, contemporary sculpture, religious carvings, Modernist glass by Gallé and Daum, Catalan blown glass, ancient and contemporary ceramics, liturgical silverwork, Oriental carpets and period furniture. The carpet room allows visitors to walk on a glass floor beneath which carpets and bacinas (basins) are displayed.
