About the museum

The Centre d’Interpretació de l’Aigua de Torrelavit opened at the end of 2016 to highlight the Riudebitlles river and water in the Penedès. It explains how the river and its tributaries have shaped the history and landscape of the town, and connects with the Camí del Riu, a walking route through the countryside that resulted from a joint project of several municipalities to protect river areas.

The exhibition is organised in three parts. The first shows how the river was the axis of urban settlement and of the water supply, with fountains, irrigation channels and bridges. The second treats water as a place of work and reviews the local paper industry, with the twelve paper mills built in the municipality between the 17th and 20th centuries, and the history of paper and its uses. The third presents the tourist and cultural attractions of Torrelavit.

The display is supported by audiovisuals and historic photographs, some lent by residents. The centre is in the town centre, next to the Town Hall and under the Casal de Cultura.
