About the museum
The castro of Coaña, known locally as the Castrillón or Castelón de Villacondide, stands above the Navia estuary in western Asturias. Excavations began in 1877 and continued for more than two centuries. Its occupation is attributed to the Albiones, an Asturian-Celtic people of the Second Iron Age, although radiocarbon dating points to occupation from the 6th century BC.
After the Roman conquest the settlement controlled the traffic in gold from the nearby mines, and its period of greatest development is placed in the second half of the 1st century AD. It is estimated that it may have housed between 1,500 and 2,000 people. In 2014 it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural.
The site has two areas: the acropolis, a walled enclosure with a triangular plan, with a sacred enclosure that is now interpreted as castro saunas, and the Barrio Norte, with more than eighty circular or rectangular buildings and a tower with slate walls. Next to the car park is the education room of the Parque Arqueológico de la Cuenca del Navia.
