About the museum

The museum opened in September 2001 on the initiative of the Asociación Cultural Amigos de la Historia, after Puerto de Vega received the Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias award in 1995. It pays tribute to the lives of seafarers, farmers and emigrants, and is today run by the Fundación Amigos de la Historia.

It occupies the east wing of the former La Arenesca canning factory, a building from the early 20th century. In the entrance courtyard are displayed canning machinery and equipment, tiles from the local industry and a wooden boat.

On the ground floor a traditional seafarer's and farmer's house is recreated, with kitchen and bedroom, alongside farming and fishing tools from the 19th century and workshops for eight trades: spinner, net maker, blacksmith, clog maker, basket maker, shoemaker, stonemason and cabinetmaker. There is also a century-old forge and a collection of boatbuilding carpentry. On the mezzanine, Asturian emigration, the merchant navy, naval model making and a collection of marine fauna and fossils from the Cantabrian coast are presented.
