About the museum

The house was the Santacana family residence. The museum was founded in 1876 by Francesc Santacana i Campmany (1810-1896), a painter and collector who gathered fragments of old palaces and religious buildings out of a Romantic ideal. His grandson, Francesc Santacana i Romeu (1883-1936), continued the project, named it L'Enrajolada and expanded it after the family pharmacy closed in 1905. In 1916 he designed the new façade on the street that now bears the family's name, and he published illustrated catalogues in 1909 and 1929.

The property passed to the Diputació de Barcelona, which acquired the house and the collections. The rooms are arranged to recall the original function of the pieces: windows, doors, capitals and corbels are set into the garden façades and the interior, and tiles cover the lower walls of several rooms.

The collection includes tiles from the 14th to the 20th century, ceramics, more than one hundred architectural and sculptural elements from churches and convents in Barcelona, Poblet, Montserrat and Ripoll, works linked to the Escuela de Nobles Artes de Barcelona (with pieces by Marià Fortuny, Pau Rigalt and Claudi Lorenzale), the Faraudo collection, with 329 pieces of Catalan and Valencian ceramics, and furniture and decorative objects.
