About the museum
The Centre d’Interpretació de la Pedra Seca (CIPS) opened its doors on 20 March 2011 in La Vileta, the highest part of Torrebesses, a village in the Segrià, in the Lleida area. It arose within a project to study and make known the rural heritage of the municipality, whose inventory recorded almost seven hundred agricultural dry-stone constructions, among them huts, cisterns, field walls and wells.
The centre occupies two former houses that have been restored. On the ground floor are the reception and the temporary exhibition room; on the first floor, the permanent exhibition, a multipurpose room for talks and workshops, and a small library. The basement contains a cellar, a stable, old converted silos and a small workshop with tools for working stone.
Since June 2021 the permanent exhibition has been “Tota pedra fa paret. La pedra seca a Catalunya”, an exhibition of the Generalitat de Catalunya linked to the recognition by UNESCO of dry-stone technique as intangible heritage of humanity, transferred to the centre for ten renewable years. The CIPS is also the starting point for guided visits around the village and its dryland landscape dotted with dry-stone constructions. In 2019 it received an award for the best initiative to promote cultural heritage for tourism.
