About the museum

The Centre Grau-Garriga d’Art Tèxtil Contemporani occupies Can Quitèria, an urban stately house built between 1879 and 1884, with a square plan and a ground floor and two upper floors. It opened in March 2019 in the hometown of the artist Josep Grau-Garriga and presents itself as the first contemporary textile art centre in Spain.

The centre shows works by Grau-Garriga and part of the municipal collection of tapestries and textile art, as well as contemporary textile art that changes with each exhibition programme. Its exhibitions are not permanent: the municipal holdings are presented in a dynamic and flexible way and complemented by activities that expand their content. The second line of work is promoting multidisciplinary contemporary artistic creation linked to the textile world, whatever the result: object, installation, performance, video or educational activity.

The new centre partly takes over the role of the Museu del Tapís Contemporani, housed in Casa Aymat, which has been transformed into a space for artistic creation and training, with a workshop for learning tapestry techniques and creative residencies.
