About the museum
The museum occupies the castle of Rubí, which the town council restored to conserve and promote the town's heritage. From late 1995 until November 1998 it was run by the Fundación Centro Europeo del Patrimonio, and the Castell Ecomuseu Urbà opened in 1996. In 2000 it reopened under municipal management, aiming to become a local history museum, and the building was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (protected local heritage site); in 2001 it joined the Red de Museos Locales of the Diputació de Barcelona.
For a time it kept the ecomuseum model, focused on the relationship between heritage and environment, until in 2007 it was renamed the Museu Municipal Castell and strengthened its orientation towards the study and dissemination of local history. In 2009, together with accessibility works (ramps in the courtyard and an interior lift), the content of the permanent exhibition was completely renewed.
The permanent exhibition offers a journey through time, from the prehistoric origins of the town, with settlements beside the riera (dry watercourse), the Iberians and the Romanisation, to the Middle Ages around the castle and the church of Sant Pere, the expansion of vineyards and industrialisation, and the arrival of the railway and migrations, with human mobility as the common thread. The MMUC also has two municipal exhibition spaces, the Antiga Estació (old station) and the Aula Cultural.
