About the museum
The Museu del Còmic i la Il·lustració de Sant Cugat opened on 13 June 2019 and presents itself as the first museum at national level devoted to the history of comics and illustration. It is a private non-profit initiative of the Fundació privada del còmic i la il·lustració, promoted by the collectors José Luis Villanueva and Paco Baena, who each contribute close to 45% of the permanent exhibition.
The permanent route runs from the first manifestations of the medium, around 1865, and the satirical and children's magazines of the 19th century to recent titles and characters. It brings together around 1,500 pieces, including period publications and original artwork, which makes it possible to compare the author's final artwork with the printed comic book (tebeo). It shows the graphic and conceptual evolution of the comic strip, its expansion in the mid-20th century and the turning point of the 1980s, when it began to target an adult audience.
In 2024 the Sala Manga opened, which traces the history of Japanese comics from the 19th century to today and their impact in Spain, from the series of the 1960s to the 1980s to the rise of Dragon Ball. The museum also runs temporary exhibitions, after-school courses, family and holiday workshops, school visits and the annual Qomic Boom days, a meeting between fans and professionals.
