About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación de la Cultura Andalusí is an exhibition room that belongs to the Algeciras Municipal Museum. It opened in 2009 as part of the rehabilitation of the Parque Arqueológico de las Murallas Meriníes, a project in which the Ministry of Culture, the Junta de Andalucía, the Diputación de Cádiz and the Algeciras town council collaborated. The building was erected next to the medieval walls, on top of the remains of an old medieval cemetery.
The centre aims to disseminate the city's medieval history and its role as a gateway to Al-Ándalus and a port of great political and military importance. The visit begins with an eight-minute video on the origin of the archaeological park and Islamic Algeciras. The ground floor is devoted to the 13th-century walls, with models of their construction system and a reproduction of a burial, and the first floor to domestic life, with ceramics and a kitchen from the period.
The town council's record indicates that the centre is temporarily closed and gives no reopening date.
