About the museum

The Municipal Museum of Algeciras was founded in 1995 and falls under the Culture Department of the town council. Its first home was the former Casa de los Guardeses of Villa Smith; in 2015 its collections were brought together in the former Hospital de la Caridad on Calle Teniente Miranda, a building adapted for museum use. The museum is organised into a history and archaeology section and a sacred art section.

The permanent exhibition takes visitors on a tour through six rooms: Prehistory of the Campo de Gibraltar, the ancient period (Punic, Roman and Byzantine), the Middle Ages, the Early Modern period and Contemporary History. Highlights include a pedestal dedicated to the goddess Diana, dating from the 2nd century, and the amphorae from the Roman kilns of Rinconcillo. One display case is devoted to the fish-salting factories of the old town, such as the one on Calle San Nicolás, which is a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The museum also has a permanent room with the exhibition “Lozas y azulejos de la Colección Municipal”, a selection of ceramics from fifty-three Spanish potteries. Its cultural activities include the Pieza del Mes, the Aula Abierta lecture series, the children's workshop “Sabadeo de Museo”, courses and the magazine Caetaria.
