About the museum
The museum opened in June 1999 and holds one of the largest natural history collections in the province of Cádiz. The municipal website places it in the visitor centre “Casa Urrutia”, a stately 18th-century house whose battlements and tower were added in the mid-20th century.
Its holdings exceed 50,000 pieces, of which some 10,000 are on display: fossils from around the world, minerals, sea shells, corals, insects, sand samples and some Asian objects. Highlights include the collection of fossil molluscs from the Paris Basin, a petrified dinosaur egg from northern China, Lower Cambrian trilobites and the skull of a Cretaceous crocodile.
Part of the visitors come from schools, for which the exhibition serves as a teaching aid. The town’s former granary (Pósito), dating from the reign of Charles III, is now used as an exhibition hall and should not be confused with the museum’s headquarters.
