About the museum
The Cabezo de la Jara is a natural area about 7 km from Puerto Lumbreras, declared a site of Community interest to protect some fifteen habitats. Its highest point reaches 1,246 m above sea level, and its landscape combines deep ramblas (dry riverbeds), centuries-old holm oak woodland and old farmsteads (cortijos).
The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza is designed as an interactive visit through panels, games and audiovisuals. It has six areas: the natural environment and landscape, with a giant model on which children and adults can locate the points of the visit; the native flora and protected species; the fauna, including the eagle owl, Bonelli's eagle, the fox and the spur-thighed tortoise; the human history of the site; and an audiovisual room.
The centre is part of a complex that includes the Albergue Juvenil Cabezo de la Jara youth hostel and the Astronomical Observatory, as well as two ecotourism trails of about 1,800 m: the astronomical trail, which reproduces the solar system to scale, and the botanical trail.
