About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación de la Mujer en la Guerra Civil opened in Navalagamella on 6 May 2022, on the initiative of the town council and with the collaboration of the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Community of Madrid. It was set up to promote local historical heritage and attract visitors to the municipality, which played a strategic role in the Civil War and still has many remains of fortifications, such as bunkers and a military camp.
The centre occupies the Antiguas Escuelas, a building from 1892 that was renovated for this purpose. It is a small space that presents the war from the point of view of women, both those at the front and those who stayed behind, in an objective and impartial way that covers the role of women on both sides.
The exhibition combines information panels, posters of the period, videos, uniforms and illustrations. To prepare the visit, the town council's tourism department has published a digital book with all the information about the centre. Group visits of 10 to 50 people must be booked in advance.
