About the museum
The Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial was commissioned by Philip II to commemorate the victory of Saint Quentin (1557), won on the feast of Saint Lawrence, and to provide a family pantheon, as his father Charles I had wished. The first stone was laid in 1563 and the foundation charter was signed in 1567.
The works were carried out between 1563 and 1584 under the direction of Juan Bautista de Toledo, Juan de Herrera, from whom the Herrerian style derives, and Francisco de Mora. The complex brings together in a single building a basilica, a royal palace (of the Habsburgs and of the Bourbons), a monastery, a college, a library and the pantheon of the kings. It was first inhabited by Hieronymite monks and, from 1885, by Augustinian friars.
The visit now covers the library, the pantheons, the main cloister, the chapter houses, the basilica, the palaces and the Hall of Battles; from October 2026 the Museums of Painting and Architecture are added. The building stands at 1,028 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of Mount Abantos, in the Guadarrama mountains, and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2 November 1984.
