About the museum
The Monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a rock monastery built under the shelter of the rock at the beginning of the 10th century. It is a Romanesque gem and the first royal pantheon of Aragon, and it forms part of the Protected Landscape of San Juan de la Peña and Monte Oroel. The complex consists of the Old Monastery, beneath the rock, and the New Monastery, about 1.5 kilometres away.
The New Monastery was built after a fire in 1675 and was rehabilitated as a guesthouse, which still operates inside it. The interpretation centres are located in this building. The Monastery Interpretation Centre offers a journey through time to learn how the monastery worked and the daily life of the monks.
The Kingdom of Aragon Interpretation Centre occupies the Baroque church of the New Monastery. It is an interactive space with an audiovisual projected onto large moving screens adapted to the architecture of the church, and a glass floor that allows visitors to see the former rooms of the monastery.
