About the museum
The Museo de Dibujo Julio Gavín “Castillo de Larrés” (MUDDI) is in Larrés, near Sabiñánigo (Huesca). In 1979, after the opening of the Museo Ángel Orensanz y Artes de Serrablo, Julio Gavín proposed to the Asociación Amigos de Serrablo that they recover the castle to install a museum devoted exclusively to drawing in a rural setting.
The building, which may have had a defensive tower in the 11th century, was built at the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th centuries and extended in the 16th; it has a central courtyard with pointed Gothic arches. It belonged to the Urriés family until the end of the 19th century and was then left almost abandoned. In 1983 the association bought it for one peseta, and between 1983 and 1986 it was restored and adapted as a museum, financed mainly by the Government of Aragon.
The museum opened in 1986. Julio Gavín assembled the first holdings by going in person to artists, galleries and collectors. The collection now exceeds 5,000 works, of which some 380 are on display across 17 rooms, covering the period from the late 19th century to the present day.
