About the museum
The museum is in El Puente de Sabiñánigo (Huesca), in the Casa Batanero, a typical dwelling of the 19th-century Aragonese Pyrenees. Sabiñánigo City Council created it at a plenary session in January 1978, and it opened in August 1979. It grew out of two founding collections: that of the sculptor Ángel Orensanz, who donated the house and a set of his works, and that of the association Amigos de Serrablo, with a broad display of popular crafts from the district.
The idea of a “living museum” guides its work. The building itself, of some 680 square metres over three floors, functions almost as an ecomuseum: it is the starting point for trails through the landscape and abandoned villages of the area and for the Serrablo church route, and it even has an ethnobotanical garden. Over the years it has been extended with a second building, joined to the first by an overhang.
Its collections cover farming and pastoral life, textiles, childhood, folk medicine, the traditional music of the Pyrenees, popular religiosity, vernacular architecture and the ethnological drawings of Julio Gavín. There is also a room devoted to the work of Ángel Orensanz, others dedicated to the ethnologists Julio Caro Baroja and Antonio Beltrán, and a specialised library named after Rafael Andolz.
