About the museum
The Centro de Recepción Los Señores de las Casas-Palacio occupies the ground floor of the Casa de Cultura in Tapia de Casariego. It is one of the three entrance gateways of the Parque Histórico del Navia, together with those of Grandas de Salime (Los primeros pobladores) and Puerto de Vega (Historias del mar). Each serves as a welcome and information point, houses a thematic museum and is the starting point of a route through the main landmarks of the regional heritage.
The Tapia gateway is devoted to the powerful lineages that dominated the land and the lives of its inhabitants for more than a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire. It covers castles, palaces, manor houses, convents and bishoprics, and the self-sufficient rural way of life that developed in their shadow, with the architectural, ethnographic and culinary legacy it left behind.
The rooms are guided by automatically controlled lighting, images and sound, and by re-created settings and characters. The visitor is greeted by a holographic figure of the first Marquis of Casariego in his study. There is also a traditional peasant kitchen and objects linked to Gonzalo Méndez Cancio, born in the town, who became governor of La Florida and promoted the cultivation of maize in Europe.
