About the museum
The Mancha Blanca Visitor and Interpretation Centre, in the municipality of Tinajo, is the main information centre of Timanfaya National Park. Its permanent exhibition rooms cover the National Park Network, the protected areas of Lanzarote, the internal structure of the Earth, geodynamics and volcanism, the origin of the Canary Islands and the recent volcanism of Timanfaya. The panels are in Spanish, English and German, and there are models of the volcanic origin of the islands and of coastal species.
The visit includes a seismic and volcanic monitoring booth with real-time images from the METEOSAT satellite, an area dedicated to cultivation in geria (traditional farming in volcanic ash), a room that simulates an eruption, and a screening room with programmes lasting about 30 minutes, with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish, English, German and French. Outside, a raised walkway crosses the lava flows of the 1730–1736 eruptions, which reached farmland.
The centre also has a sensory experience room designed for people with motor, hearing or visual impairments, with Braille panels and tactile and smell elements. There is a library with photo, video and press archives, and a shop selling books and handicrafts.
