About the museum
The Fundación César Manrique was created in 1982 as a private cultural institution to preserve and disseminate the work of its founder. Its seat, the Taro de Tahíche, opened as a cultural centre on 27 March 1992, six months before the artist's death. Before that it was Manrique's house, which he designed on his return from New York, when he decided to settle permanently in Lanzarote; he lived there from 1968 to 1988, longer than in any of his other homes.
The house stands on a lava flow from the eruptions of 1730–1736 and occupies around 3,000 m² of a 30,000 m² estate. The upper floor follows the island's traditional architecture, with large windows and zenithal light. The lower floor makes use of five natural volcanic bubbles, connected by tunnels dug into the lava, and houses a swimming pool, a small dance floor, an oven and a barbecue. Around it extend gardens with plants, artworks, black lava, picón (volcanic gravel) and socos (planting hollows), with walls against the wind that protect fruit trees.
The visit ends in the painter's former studio, where his paintings are displayed. The foundation holds two collections: the Manrique Collection, with the artist's own work, and the contemporary art collection he assembled, made up mainly of artists from his generation. The foundation also runs the César Manrique House-Museum in Haría, with which it offers a combined ticket.
