About the museum
The El Grifo winery, founded in 1775, is one of the oldest in the Canary Islands. During restoration work in 1986, the foundation stone confirming that year of origin came to light. Today the old winery building functions as the Museo del Vino, in the heart of the present-day winery, in the volcanic landscape of La Geria, famous for its vines sheltered by semicircular stone walls.
The museum holds a collection of historical machinery used over more than two and a half centuries of winemaking on Lanzarote. Its most emblematic space is the old treading vat of 1775, built of volcanic stone, where grapes were once pressed by hand before the must was sent to oak barrels. The foundation stone bearing the date 1775 is one of the most valuable pieces. The route also includes historical documents and curiosities about viticulture on the island, adapted to extreme conditions.
The visit can be made with an audio guide, lasting 45 minutes and including a tasting of two wines, or as part of guided tours that add a walk through the vineyard, access to the Casa Familiar and the library, and more complete tastings.
