About the museum
The Museo Atlántico is an underwater museum located in a sheltered bay near Las Coloradas beach, in Playa Blanca (Yaiza), in the south of Lanzarote. It opened in 2016 and is the work of the British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who specialises in underwater art and ocean conservation.
The collection brings together ten installations of pH-neutral concrete sculptures, a material designed to encourage marine life, which sit at depths of about 12–14 metres and function as an artificial reef. The works, including the group “Cruzando el Rubicón”, raise topical questions such as the use of natural resources. As the ecosystem continuously transforms them, the ensemble changes over time.
The museum's official activity was suspended in 2020. In January 2024 the Cabildo de Lanzarote announced, together with the artist, its intention to reopen it, and a technical and legal working group would be set up to define the model and timetable. In the meantime, diving centres in the area offer guided dives to the site.
