About the museum
The El Dornajo visitor centre is on the A-395 road from Granada to Sierra Nevada, in the municipal area of Güéjar Sierra, and is one of the public-use facilities of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and National Park. It is run by the Junta de Andalucía; since late 2025 the company Gestión Técnica Medioambiental Sur has handled visitor services, environmental activities, the shop and the café.
The exhibition offers a historical journey through Sierra Nevada, guided by notable figures, scientists and Romantic travellers, and presents the sierra as a sanctuary of biodiversity because of its many endemic species. It includes an ethnographic route through traditional uses such as agriculture, mining, the medicinal use of mineral and thermal waters and the making of neveros (snow pits), and recalls the tourist boost brought in the early 19th century by the first tramway to cross these mountains, which ended its route at a large hotel.
The centre also encourages visitors to head outdoors: nearby are the Sulayr circular trail, the Ahí de Cara viewpoint and the Hoya de Pedraza botanical garden. There are audioguides about naturalists and travellers, a library and a shop selling books, maps and local products.
