About the museum

The Centro de Visitantes Fábrica de Hielo occupies a building in the fishing quarter of Bajo de Guía, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, which was formerly a fishermen’s guild and an ice factory. It is today one of the public-use facilities of the Doñana Natural Area, managed by the Junta de Andalucía, and it is located on the Cádiz bank of the mouth of the Guadalquivir.

The exhibition gives an overview of the natural area: the flora and fauna that shape the landscape and the richness of the marine ecosystem associated with the river mouth. Some natural elements can be identified by touch, and the history and culture of Doñana and the Lower Guadalquivir are presented with archaeological reproductions.

The centre also covers the Sanlúcar marshes, which share with Doñana the habitat of animal and plant species such as the flamingo and the avocet. It has a reception, a souvenir shop and a viewing terrace, and it sells tickets for the river trip along the Guadalquivir.
