About the museum
The José Antonio Valverde Visitor Centre overlooks the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra from a small rise called the Cerro del Palo, next to the administrative offices of the Nature Reserve. It is named after the biologist José Antonio Valverde Gómez, from Valladolid, a pioneer of scientific bird ringing in Spain and a driving force behind the protection of Doñana and wetlands in general. It is an information and visitor reception facility of the Junta de Andalucía.
The lagoon is the most important wetland on the Iberian Peninsula for breeding the greater flamingo, and much of the exhibition is devoted to this bird: its ecology, life cycle, reproduction, feeding, migratory movements and ringing. Other waterbirds, vegetation adapted to brackish environments and the former activity of the salt pans are also presented, as well as human influence on the shape of the lagoon.
The audiovisual “Como un espejo” (“Like a Mirror”) shows the relationship between local residents, environmental volunteers and visitors to the wetland. From inside the building and from the nearby paths and viewpoints there are wide views of the water and of the birds that frequent it. The centre has a shop, toilets, drinks vending machines and a personalised information point.
