About the museum
The Colección Museográfica de Gilena is a municipal institution registered in the Register of Museums and Museographic Collections of the Department of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía. It is an institutional member of ICOM and holds two good-practice certificates, one from the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage and another from the European TEHIC project.
It has two collections. The archaeological one brings together pieces from different historical phases of Gilena and its surroundings, from the Copper Age to the 13th century. It breaks with the traditional chronological narrative and proposes a storyline based on sociocultural anthropology, focused on life and death. The artistic collection consists of works in various techniques and formats by Francisco Maireles Vela, professor of Colour at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Seville. These form the founding holdings and refer to the historical avant-gardes and the Seville schools. They are displayed in a space with a retrofuturist aesthetic.
As complementary facilities, the museum has the Arqueódromo or Recreódromo, officially called “Campo de Marte”, where Greek and Roman architectural spaces have been reconstructed to serve as the setting for historical re-enactments, and two gardens: the Jardín Laberinto and the Jardín Memorial.
