About the museum

The La Rocina Visitor Centre lies next to the village of El Rocío, on the lower course of the La Rocina stream, and is one of the public-use facilities of the Doñana Natural Area. It is the starting point of the walking trail “Charco de la Boca”, which follows part of the stream bed.

La Rocina is the main freshwater input reaching the marsh and brings together a mosaic of landscapes: pine forests, ferns, heathland, brambles and reed beds, as well as white scrubland with jaguarzo and aromatic scrub such as lavender, rosemary and thyme. The centre explains these plant formations and the associated fauna, in which aquatic and migratory birds abound, such as the greylag goose, the purple swamphen and the squacco heron.

During the visit, visitors can see the huts, the traditional dwellings in which local people lived, and learn about the history of the Romería del Rocío, to which the centre’s hut-exhibition is dedicated. The building also has a reception and an audiovisual room.
