About the museum
The Museo de la Villa de Almonte was created in 1999 and occupies the Molino de Cepeda, a former 18th-century olive oil mill that retains part of its original machinery, as well as the pits and jars where the oil was stored. It is a municipally owned and run museum devoted to the ethnography and anthropology of the town.
The exhibition tells the history of Almonte through the uses and trades that have developed in the municipality. It is organised into three areas: marshland and beach, forest resources and farmland, which reflect the different ways the territory has been used in the Doñana region. With graphic and audiovisual elements and restored models, it also presents the three population centres of the municipality (Almonte, El Rocío and Matalascañas), the civilisations that have passed through the territory, the origin of the Rocío Chico and the devotion to the Virgen del Rocío.
The museum closed in 2011, reopened in 2019 with a focus on the Venidas of the Virgen del Rocío, under the management of the Hermandad Matriz, and closed again in 2022. In April 2024 it reopened to mark its 25th anniversary, with a renewed exhibition. The Oficina de Atención al Peregrino has moved into this building.
