About the museum

The IES Arcebispo Xelmírez I houses the science cabinets of the former Instituto de Santiago. The original institute was created in 1845 as an extension of the University of Santiago and reflects the history of the historic secondary schools founded in the mid-19th century under the Plan Pidal.

The collection consists of scientific apparatus, instruments and teaching material, mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, of great educational and historical value. It covers the cabinets of Acoustics, Agriculture, Heat, Cosmography, Electricity and Magnetism, Gases and Pneumatics, Hydrostatics, Anatomy, Crystallography, Mechanics, Optics and Chemistry. The display cases are in the centre itself, and the collection is used as an educational resource in the institute's activities.
