About the museum
The Fundación Eugenio Granell was established in Santiago de Compostela in 1995 and opened its holdings to the public in the Pazo de Bendaña, on the Plaza del Toural. Its purpose is to study the work of Eugenio Granell, Surrealism and related currents; it also organises temporary exhibitions, concerts, performances, workshops and guided tours.
Granell was born in A Coruña in 1912 and died in Madrid in 2001. He spent his childhood and youth in Santiago, began as a violinist, was active in the POUM (Workers' Party of Marxist Unification) and began painting in 1941 in exile in the Dominican Republic. He met André Breton in 1949, lived in Guatemala and Puerto Rico and from 1956 in New York, where he taught Spanish literature at Brooklyn College.
The museum houses the Eugenio Granell collection (oils, constructions, ready-mades, collages, drawings, photographs and prints), the Surrealist collection of works by friends of his, among them Miró, Lam, Duchamp and Steinberg, the ethnic collection with objects from the five continents, the Philip West collection, with some 200 works deposited in 1997, and that of Amparo Segarra, with collages. The pazo, built at the end of the first half of the 18th century and associated with the architect Clemente Sarela, stands out for its symmetrical façade with three projecting balconies and a monumental staircase.
