About the museum
The cathedral museum is part of the cultural visit to the cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo, whose construction began in the 12th century during the reign of Ferdinand II of León. The ticket includes the museum, the cloister, the choir and an audio guide.
The archaeology room brings together prehistoric pieces from the district, funerary and coin finds from the Roman period and engraved Visigothic slates from Lerilla, as well as architectural fragments from the various phases of the cathedral. The liturgy room displays a 13th-century crozier from the Limoges school, a collection of processional crosses and the breviary of Isabel la Católica.
The sculpture section includes a large Hispano-Philippine ivory Christ, a 16th-century Saint Catherine of Alexandria and a series of seated Virgins that shows how this iconography developed. In the painting room, the highlights are “Llanto sobre Abel muerto” and a Saint Michael by Antonio María Esquivel. In the Pórtico del Perdón, an audiovisual is also screened about a reproduction of the Renaissance altarpiece painted by Fernando Gallego.
