About the museum
The Museu Histórico-Militar de Almeida is housed in the Casamatas, also called Quartéis Velhos (Old Barracks), a group of about twenty vaulted underground rooms beneath the São João de Deus Bastion, in the bastioned fortress of Almeida. They were built to house infantry, for lack of barracks, and in times of peace and war they sheltered the town's population and stored provisions. They have their own cistern and well.
Over time the space also had other uses, such as a food store and a prison. It was adapted as a museum in 2009.
The exhibition is interactive and multimedia and covers Portugal's military history, with special attention to the Peninsular Wars and the siege and invasion of Almeida. It combines replicas of weapons with original pieces.
