La Confraria – Centre d'Interpretació del Calafell Pescador

Interpretation centre in the former Pòsit of Calafell explaining the life of the fishing community of the seafront district in the 20th century.

Opening hoursAdmission €3 Partially accessible

About the museum

La Confraria occupies the building of the former fishermen’s guild of Calafell, known as the Pòsit, on the seafront promenade of the beach district. The building has become an interpretation centre on “Calafell pescador” (Calafell as a fishing village), and its mission is to tell part of the collective past and the more recent history of that seafront district.

The exhibition aims to keep alive the legacy of the beach that Carlos Barral described as the one “con más madera” (with the most timber) on the Catalan coast. It explains how the fishing community lived and organised itself: the relationship between skippers and remitgers (participants in the catch), the work at sea and on land, and its social and cultural expressions, in other words a way of life of the last century.

The route ends with the centre’s most singular piece, the “maquinilla”, a device practically unique in Catalonia which, since the twenties, helped haul boats up onto the sand, because Calafell had no harbour. La Confraria is part of La Mar de Museus, the network of Catalan-speaking maritime museums, and it has a combined ticket with the Ciutadella Ibèrica and the Castell de la Santa Creu.
