About the museum
The Iruña-Veleia site lies in the municipality of Iruña de Oca, around 10 km west of Vitoria-Gasteiz, on the Arkiz spur, surrounded by a large meander of the Zadorra river. It has more than 1,500 years of history, from the first millennium BCE to the 5th century, and covers around 126 hectares, of which 11 lie within the walled enclosure. It was declared a monumental complex (conjunto monumental) in 1984.
The first Roman urban houses appear in the first half of the 1st century. In the Flavian period the city reached its greatest splendour, with luxurious houses and large public buildings, and in the 2nd century it is cited by Pliny and Ptolemy. At the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century the wall was built, the last major public work, with a perimeter of about 1.5 km and 16 towers, whose foundations are still preserved together with the south gate.
The visit combines a signposted route with information panels and a guide map, a small reception centre with graphic information and leaflets, and guided tours that pass through the open area or outside the walls, with the remains of a large market, the wall and the south gate. The materials from the excavations are kept in the archaeology section of the Museo Bibat in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
