About the museum
The museum originates in the Litografía Alemana of Cádiz, set up in 1861, which worked as a printing press until the end of the 20th century. Cádiz was the third Spanish city, after Madrid and Barcelona, to have a lithographic workshop, and the museum is considered one of the few of its kind in Spain and the most complete.
Its collection brings together more than a thousand high-quality lithographic stones from the quarries of Bavaria, well preserved and displayed to the public. Some are true works of art because of the old engravings and drawings they retain. Among the most striking pieces are a stone of more than 300 kg and a hand press made in Paris in 1850, one of the few still surviving in the world.
The museum is located in the Bóvedas de San Roque, beside the walls of Puerta de Tierra, and also keeps tools and mementos that engravers and specialists still use.
