About the museum
The Ecomuseo La Alcogida, in the village of Tefía, is an open-air ethnographic museum that shows the life of the Majorero farmer from the 19th century until a few decades ago. It is part of the network of centres and museums of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. The Cabildo renovated it with rehabilitation works and a new museological layout, and with this reopening it introduced guided tours for the first time.
The route passes seven whitewashed stone houses with pitched roofs, which exemplify different types of architecture: from the simple farmhouse to two-storey stately houses with balconies, wooden staircases and tiled roofs. Two of them contain workshops where artisans from the island work, with whom visitors can interact and whose pieces can be bought.
The complex also includes domestic animals such as goats, donkeys and camels; plants such as prickly pears, tabaibas and palm trees; the traditional rainwater collection system; bread ovens, threshing floors and straw stores (pajeros). Trades such as milling in the tahona (a mill), bread and cheese making, pottery and weaving are shown, and children's workshops and traditional games are organised.
