About the museum

The archaeological museum of Betancuria, the first capital of the Canary Islands after the conquest, began as a local collection in the town. In 1984 the Martín Fajardo family donated the building and the holdings of the former museum to the Cabildo (island council), and that building was ultimately assigned to offices of the new centre.

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura built a new building on an adjoining plot, with about 2,700 m² spread over three levels and an internal connection to the old museum through a courtyard. The new Museo Arqueológico Insular opened its doors in December 2020, several years after the works were completed.

Its mission is to disseminate the island’s archaeological heritage, especially that of the Majos, and to give researchers access to its collections. It holds objects and remains from sites such as the Montaña de Tindaya, the Cueva de Villaverde, La Atalayita, La Fortaleza and La Pared, which make it possible to reconstruct the magico-religious world of this people, its material culture and its survival strategies in an arid environment over more than two thousand years.
