About the museum
The Tostón Lighthouse was built at the end of the 19th century; work began in 1897. It marked the Tostón shoal, opposite Punta de la Ballena, and the Bocaina passage, the strait between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. It is a rectangular stone building with the tower attached to one corner, and today it is a symbol of the island's seafaring character.
The lighthouse houses the Museo de la Pesca Tradicional, which is run by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. The site was chosen for its proximity to El Cotillo, one of the fishing settlements that has best preserved its seafaring identity. The museum covers the bond of the majoreros (people of Fuerteventura) with the sea since the aboriginal period, fishing as a livelihood for the island's communities, and the knowledge of sustainable fishing passed down from generation to generation. It also includes spaces reserved for temporary exhibitions and art displays.
According to the website of the Museos de Fuerteventura, the museum is temporarily closed for works.
