About the museum
The house museum commemorates Miguel de Unamuno's stay in Fuerteventura, where he was exiled to the island in 1924 by the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. The writer experienced his exile as an enriching experience: he spent nearly half a year touring the island, made friends, took an interest in its history and people, and wrote articles and sonnets about its landscape.
The building, in the centre of what was once Puerto Cabras, today Puerto del Rosario, is the main surviving witness to that stay; according to some guides, it occupies the former Hotel Fuerteventura, where the writer stayed. A commemorative sculpture of Unamuno greets visitors at the entrance.
The interior recreates a bourgeois house on the island in the past century, with fine woods, large curtains, a typewriter and a phonograph. It is run by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura (island council) within its network of museums.
