About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Iniesta occupies the former Ermita de la Concepción, a single-nave church built in 1589, as shown by an inscribed board preserved on one of the beams of its roof. The original mudéjar coffered ceiling is one of the most remarkable features of the building, which has two entrances: one to the south, with an ashlar doorway, and another to the west, which opens onto a square.
The collection brings together pieces from two sites excavated using scientific methods, the Iberian necropolises of Cerro Gil (5th–3rd centuries BC) and Punta del Barrionuevo (3rd–1st centuries BC), as well as materials from other sites in the town and the district. The first room is devoted to the Bronze Age, with display cases on everyday life and the funerary world, and two reproductions of rock paintings from the Hoz de Vicente rock shelter. The large central room is devoted to Iberian culture, with urns, weapons, coins and farming tools, and the last room presents the period of Romanisation.
The main piece is a mosaic of almost 10 m² found in the Cerro Gil necropolis and dated to the late 5th century BC, one of the oldest figurative mosaics in the Mediterranean. It is made of coloured pebbles and depicts a seated winged goddess, identified with Tanit/Astarte, beside a wolf. It is displayed alongside a 1:1 scale reproduction of the funerary structure with which it was associated and part of the original grave goods.
