About the museum
The Museo Municipal de Albacete occupies the former town hall, on the Plaza del Altozano in the city centre. In 1879 the council moved its activity to this 18th-century mansion, which was remodelled in 1902, and in July 1903 the first session of the Palacio Municipal was held there. In 1911 the staircases, ceilings and decoration were reformed, and in 1960 the current exposed-brick façade was built. Since 1996 it has been the seat of the Municipal Museum.
The museum hosts temporary exhibitions and displays about the city in several rooms, and it holds various paintings owned by the town council. Its permanent collection is of international folk art: on an upper floor of the building is the Museo Internacional de Arte Popular del Mundo (International Museum of World Folk Art), which brings together the collection assembled by the art critic Juan Ramírez de Lucas. It includes craft pieces from the five continents, organised into three areas: the cycle of nature, the cycle of life and the cycle of ideas.
