About the museum

The Museo del Niño de Castilla–La Mancha was founded in 1987 by the teacher Juan Peralta Juárez in Albacete, with the aim of rescuing, preserving and promoting the historical heritage of childhood, family and school in the region. Since 2000 it has belonged to the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla–La Mancha, and its management falls under the regional Department of Education.

It is housed in the former premises of the Virgen de los Llanos school, in the Hospital district, in a school building that the town council constructed in 1958 and 1959 for two graded schools, one for girls and one for boys. It opened on 10 October 1960, together with the new Teacher Training College.

Its rooms recreate historic classrooms, from the Bourbon Restoration to the Franco era, and there are sections on marginalised children, children’s layettes, play, toys, comics and the world of puppets and marionettes, as well as a room of magic lanterns and 19th-century projection devices. The museum also has a documentation centre with more than 12,000 school textbooks from the 19th and 20th centuries and an important archive of documents, slides and educational films.
