About the museum
The Espazo Caritel arose from a project begun in 1990 by the sculptor Daniel Río Rubal, known as Caxigueiro, which combines his artistic work with his passion for plants. It lies in the village of Caritel, in the parish of San Martiño de Mondoñedo (Foz), about 5 km from Foz and about 200 m from the Romanesque basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo, a national monument.
The building, designed by the architect José D. Moscoso, houses the artist's art room and studio, where his main works and temporary exhibitions are shown. Around it extends a garden of about 3,500 m² with more than a hundred varieties of camellias, as well as hydrangeas, ferns, native flora and species from several continents.
The visit is made with a guide. According to the information available, the best time to see the camellias is winter and early spring.
