About the museum

The museum was conceived to hold, study and display the materials from the excavations carried out at the Viladonga hillfort since 1971. Its construction began in 1975 on the initiative of the archaeologist Manuel Chamoso Lamas, to a design by Carlos Fernández-Gago, and was completed in 1977. In 1983 a ministerial order created the Museo Monográfico del Castro de Viladonga, and it was officially inaugurated on 29 November 1986.

In 1989 management passed to the Department of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia, which carried out an extension and refurbishment between 1991 and 1994.

The permanent exhibition is organised in four rooms, from room 0 to room 3, and focuses on the castro and the castro world after the Roman conquest. The pieces include pottery, coins, adobe bricks and hunting and household tools, which can also be viewed in 3D on the museum's website. The texts in each room are translated into Spanish, French, English and German. The hillfort, which is free to enter, is visited outdoors beside the museum.
