About the museum
Fagus Alkiza is the interpretation centre for Hernio-Gazume, a limestone massif of 2,158 hectares with karst relief and great ecological and landscape value. For years it was in the attic of the town hall, and in February 2026 it reopened on the upper floor of the Erretore house, on the village square, which the council had bought in 2020 as part of a wider tourism project.
The new site covers about 300 m², twice the size of the previous one, and is organised into three areas: nature, the relationship between people and their environment, and rural culture as a place of encounter and reflection. Panels, audio guides and exhibitions on birds, insects, bats and forest trees explain the heritage of the protected area, including its pollarded beech woods (hayedos trasmochos). The centre also serves as a meeting point for residents, the people of the caseríos, nature enthusiasts, artists and walkers.
Several walking routes of varying difficulty start from the centre, passing waterfalls, caseríos, beech woods and rock walls where birds of prey nest. Self-guided access is booked online.
