About the museum
The Herri Kirolen Museoa was set up in the Gazteluko Ostatua, the village inn of Gaztelu, and presented to the public on 15 September 2023 at an event that included a parade with music and demonstrations of rural sports such as sega, aizkora, trontza and ingudea. The initiative came from the town council, and the script and selection of images were the work of adviser Gorka Egia.
The space is organised in three areas: one explaining what herri kirolak are, one dedicated to the athletes and a third showing the relationship between Gaztelu and these sports. Tools and objects belonging to champions are on display, including the vest of stone lifter Karmele Gisasola “Zelai III”, a stone belonging to Aimar Irigoien, and axes of Olasagasti and Irati Astondoa; next to each item, the career of its owner is summarised.
The inn is also decorated with photographs of rural sports. Under each image there is a QR code that links to an explanatory video, with material from the NO-DO newsreel archive and Swedish documentaries.
