About the museum

The Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes is a 17th-century Baroque building, founded by Justino de Neve, in the Santa Cruz district. Its church preserves mural frescoes and works by Valdés Leal, and some canvases by Lucas Valdés recount the origins of the hospital. In 1987 the Brotherhood of the Venerables agreed with the Archdiocese of Seville that its works of art would be kept and safeguarded by the Fundación Focus-Abengoa, which installed its headquarters in the hospital in 1991.

Today the Fundación Focus-Loyola runs the monument, which is visited with an audio guide. The Centro Velázquez, prompted by the acquisition in 2007 of the canvas “Santa Rufina”, brings together works by Velázquez and by his Sevillian contemporaries, such as Pacheco, Herrera el Viejo, Murillo and Zurbarán. In the room that was once the upper infirmary, a collection of contemporary art is shown, with works by Carmen Laffón, Ramón Gaya and Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The complex also includes a Baroque library, a Grenzing organ and the altana (rooftop lookout), with views over the Santa Cruz district.
