About the museum

The museum displays the collection that the collector Mariano Bellver decided to donate to Seville in 2000. Seville town council received the donation in May 2015 and first presented it in the Pabellón Real. At the end of 2016 Casa Fabiola was chosen as the permanent venue, and the museum opened on 11 October 2018, one month before the death of the donor.

The collection brings together 567 works: 299 paintings, 112 sculptures, 57 ivory and bone figures, 44 pieces of furniture, 42 porcelain and ceramic pieces and 13 clocks. It focuses on Sevillian genre painting (costumbrismo), of which it is the most extensive collection, and its chronology begins in the 16th century. The works are grouped into seven sections, among them “Pintores y viajeros”, “Costumbrismo romántico” and “Paisajes y vistas”; one room recreates a domestic chapel with religious art.

Casa Fabiola is a 16th-century palace located on Calle Fabiola, near the cathedral and the Alcázar; its present structure dates from the late 19th century. It has a central courtyard, a gallery and a marble staircase, about 1,915 m² over three floors and 13 exhibition rooms. The Lara family bought the building in 2000 and restored it in 2001–2002; the town council rented it in 2013 and bought it in 2016.
